mySifu

Privacy Policy

How the mySifu app handles your information. Effective 7 October 2026.

mySifu ("we", "us") is a mobile app for iOS and Android that shows real-time air quality (AQI) readings from Malaysian monitoring stations and can alert you when air quality gets worse. This policy explains what information the app uses, why, and the choices you have. The short version: mySifu has no accounts and no ads, and it does not sell or share your personal data.

1. Information we do not collect

mySifu does not ask for your name, email address, phone number or any other account details, because the app has no sign-up or login. We do not use advertising SDKs, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.

2. Information the app uses

Location

If you grant location permission, mySifu uses your device location to find the air quality stations nearest to you. Location is used only while the app is in use ("When In Use"). It is processed on your device. Your most recent location may be saved on your device so that background alerts can check the stations near you. Your location is not sent to our servers. You can use mySifu without location access by choosing stations manually, and you can turn off location access at any time in your device settings.

Preferences stored on your device

Your default station, favourite stations, alert rules and threshold, alert history, theme, language and onboarding status are stored locally on your device. Home screen widget data is also kept on your device so that widgets can show current readings. All of this is removed when you uninstall the app.

Notifications

If you enable AQI alerts, mySifu asks for permission to send notifications. The app checks air quality readings in the background and notifies you when your alert conditions are met. When alerts are delivered through our server, the app sends us a push notification token (a random identifier for your device issued by Apple or Google through Expo), your platform (iOS or Android), the IDs of your favourite stations, your alert threshold and whether alerts are on. This information cannot be used to identify you personally and is used only to send you the alerts you asked for. You can turn off alerts in the app or block notifications in your device settings at any time.

Crash and performance data

We use Sentry to find and fix crashes and performance problems. When the app crashes or reports an error, Sentry may receive technical information such as device model, operating system version, app version, the error and stack trace, and anonymous session and performance data. We do not attach your name, email or location to these reports.

3. Third-party services

To work, mySifu relies on the following services. Each one handles data under its own privacy policy:

Department of Environment Malaysia (DOE): air quality readings are downloaded from the public DOE air quality service. These requests do not include your location or any personal information.

Maps: station maps are shown using Apple Maps on iOS and Google Maps on Android. The map provider may receive the map area you are viewing.

Push notifications: notifications are delivered through Expo, Apple Push Notification service and Firebase Cloud Messaging.

Sentry: crash reporting and performance monitoring, as described above.

Hosting: our server and database run on Vercel and Neon.

4. How we use information

We use the information described above only to show air quality near you or at the stations you choose, to send the alerts you set up, to keep widgets up to date, and to keep the app stable and improve it. We do not sell, rent or trade your information, and we do not use it for advertising or profiling.

5. Data retention and deletion

Data stored on your device stays there until you change it in the app or uninstall the app. Device alert registrations (push token and alert preferences) are kept only while they are needed to deliver alerts. Turning off alerts or uninstalling the app stops alerts, and you can ask us to delete your device registration at any time by contacting us. Crash reports are kept by Sentry for a limited period under their standard retention policy.

6. Security

Data sent between the app and our server is encrypted in transit using HTTPS. Our server only accepts alert registrations in the expected format and does not expose them through public APIs. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect the information we handle.

7. Children

mySifu is suitable for general audiences and does not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because the app has no accounts, we do not collect information that identifies any user, including children.

8. Your rights

Depending on where you live, including under Malaysia’s Personal Data Protection Act 2010, you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal data about you. Most data used by mySifu stays on your device and is under your control. For anything held on our server, contact us and we will respond within a reasonable time.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app changes. When we do, we will post the new version on this page and update the effective date above. Material changes may also be highlighted in the app or in the app store release notes.

10. Contact us

If you have questions about this policy or your data, or want to request deletion of your data, please contact us through our Support page.
